Here are five simple ways to make a positive impression during your next job search.
1. Use a professional email address and have a professional outgoing message on your voicemail and cell phone. Inappropriate email addresses and/or outgoing messages can stop a potential employer before they even have a chance to speak with you.
2. Customize cover letters and resume objectives to the correct contact persons and company name. Double check for spelling.
3. Proofread all correspondence, particularly your resume. Many recruiters will throw away your resume if they catch typos.
4. Dress for success. It's not just about wearing professional clothes and shoes. Be careful not to overdo the makeup, jewelry, and perfume or cologne. Hair and nails also should be neatly cut.
5. Remember to say thanks. Although saying thanks may seem optional, it is an important differentiator in today's competitive job market. Saying thanks may not win you the job, but failing to do so certainly can cost you the job.
