They call it the sandwich generation. Today's workers are faced with the challenges of caring for their minor children and aging parents. Some companies are facing this challenge head on by offering elder care benefits.
Sometimes for as little as $1 per employee per month, companies can contract with care providers to assist their employees in managing this difficult work/life balance. Other programs are also available at an additional employer cost, but many employers think that every penny spent is worth it. They have seen a decrease in absenteeism, stress, and turnover. They have seen an increase in loyalty. Programs vary, but companies are getting creative. Whether it's allowing an employee to add an additional family member to their health insurance (employee pays for it, but at the family rate), providing an in-home provider to take care of basic needs, or allowing flextime to help with the scheduling, employers today are very aware of the demographic shift in this country and are making every effort to keep their employees, and their families, well taken care of.
People without help from employers can try Eldercare Locator (www.eldercare.org) or call 1 800 611-1116.
